Susan Conroy named Volunteer of the Year

Susan Controy being presented with her Volunteer of the Year award

We are delighted that Susan Conroy, New Neighbours Together (NNT) donations manager, has won ‘Volunteer of the Year’ at Burnley’s first ever Above and Beyond awards.

On collecting the award at a glittering ceremony at UCLan’s Victoria Mill Susan said:

“I accepted this award on behalf of all our wonderful volunteers. I am one tiny facet of this wonderful jewel in the heart of Burnley that is New Neighbours Together. I am humbled and honoured to receive this award, it’s for all of our volunteers – we are a wonderful team.”

Susan has been volunteering at NNT since 2017. She is loved and appreciated by volunteers and clients alike for all she does to find the practical items our clients need to help them build a home and life in Burnley.

Over the years Susan has built up a strong network of generous Burnley residents, who help her find a seemingly endless supply of quality clothing and household goods for the asylum seekers and refugees arriving in Burnley with often nothing more than a carrier bag of belongings and no disposable income.

“We are so proud of Susan, she is a shining example of the true NNT spirit of providing welcome, support and friendship to all. I couldn’t be more grateful for all she does for those who come to us, seeking help as they try to rebuild their lives and establish a safe and positive future in Burnley.”

Ruth Haygarth, CEO New Neighbours Together Burnley

The Burnley Above and Beyond awards were developed by Burnley Council, Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) and the Burnley Express to recognise Burnley’s unsung heroes, volunteers and those who go out of their way to help others.

Goods to donate? Susan is always on the lookout for quality household goods – like pots, pans, crockery and furniture – as well as clothing. Follow our Facebook page to see what items we are currently in need of.

If you are interested in volunteering with New Neighbours Together please get in touch. We are in particular need of people who are computer literate and free during working hours to help out with our advice and advocacy service.
