Learning to speak English

An essential part of integrating in the local community is being able to speak the language. Working with our partners we offer asylum seekers and refugees formal ‘English for Speakers of Other Languages’ classes. You can find out more from our volunteers at the weekly drop-in sessions on Tuesdays at St John’s Church in Burnley.

In addition we have a team of volunteer English teachers who visit people with our English at Home programme. Their role is to help families practise their English in practical ways – e.g. the language needed to speak with your local community and schools and doctors etc. This can be flexible and can work as wrap-around care, e.g. responding to immediate needs such as filling in an HC1 form (claim for help with health costs) or a more structured lesson type approach if required (e.g. telling the time or preparing for a school parents’ evening).

All our volunteers who work in people’s homes have been DBS checked and work to our lone working policy guidelines.
